About Community Foundations

Community Foundations bring together people who care about their communities. They are local, independent, volunteer-driven, charitable organizations that aim to strengthen their communities by facilitating philanthropy, partnering with donors to build permanent endowments and other funds from which they support community organizations and projects, and providing leadership on issues of broad community concern.

There are more than 191 community foundations across Canada, which hold a combined asset base of over $4.8 billion and grant over $215 million annually, making community foundations one of the largest granters nationally.

The Community Foundation movement is global. The number of Community Foundations has grown rapidly and there are now over 1800 Community Foundations worldwide. Though all Community Foundations in Canada and worldwide operate with a similar model, we are all separate, independent Foundations.
