Nan's Legacy
Kingston artist Nan Yeomans died in 2004, leaving almost all of her estate, and the art that she had produced over a period of 50 years to The Community Foundation for Kingston & Area. It was Nan's wish that the proceeds fund scholarships for promising young artists and artisans. This initiative is dedicated to Nan's legacy to her community.
Nan's Wishes Realized
Well-known Kingston regional artist Nan Yeomans created her art over more than 50 years. Primarily based in her small apartment, Kingston School of Art and St. Lawrence College, she produced diverse and intriguing works mainly of the printed medium, but also watercolours and a few oil paintings. In her Estate Plan, Nan Yeomans named The Community Foundation for Kingston & Area to receive the residue or bulk of her estate. Nan's wish was that the resulting endowment fund would provide a continuing source of financial support for individuals developing their talents as artists in the greater Kingston area. In March of 2006, the endowment fund was established with the first payment from the estate in the amount of $50,000. Nan's Legacy will transfer the values in the art within Nan's estate to The Community Foundation for Kingston & Area, allow the public to own a "Nan" and multiply the impact of the scholarship fund in Nan Yeomans' name to the benefit of talented local artists or artisans in financial need.
Nan's Legacy News
Tommie's Legacy: Nan's pet turtle Tommie survived her by three years thanks to the ongoing care provided by Nan's friend (and veterinarian) Dr. Gay Chamberlain. In August 2007, he died at the age of 38, well past the survival age for his species. During the past few months Tommie was very much part of the Nan's Legacy program, adding his own unique dimension to the various events. Children were especially captivated by Tommie and enjoyed crafting their own versions of a turtle. The lively array of more than 40 very large painted and decorated turtles created by various local artists and art classes this spring in support of Nan's Legacy confirms that Tommie caught people's attention and stimulated their imaginations. The ongoing sale of these turtles is Tommie's legacy - the resulting funds will add to the endowment fund established at the Community Foundation to support young artists and artisans.
